Assemblywoman Solages’ Statement on Trump’s offer of temporary protection for immigrants to end the shutdow

Solages calls for an end to government shutdown and advocates for DACA/TPS

In response to President Donald Trump offering temporary protection for some undocumented immigrants and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Recipients along with other measures in exchange for a permanent border wall, Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, the first person of Haitian descent elected to the New York State Legislature, issued the following statement:

“It’s very disingenuous that President Trump would offer temporary protections for TPS holders in exchange for a permanent border wall.  I urge our federal representatives to find a genuine solution to the government shutdown and also advocate for a pathway to citizenship for DACA/TPS holders. We cannot compromise American values with the possible expansion of detention camps or a temporary DACA/TPS extension.

This administration’s initial attempt to rescind the protected status of TPS beneficiaries was malicious, unjust, and adversely affected our interests here in the United States.  TPS recipients should have an opportunity to pursue careers and invest in their local communities rather than being forced to live in uncertainty and fear from federal regulations or from court decisions. We will continue to advocate for our TPS recipients from countries like Haiti, Sudan, El Salvador, and Nicaragua”
