Today marks the ninth anniversary of the day Haiti faced one the worst natural disasters in history. We remember all those who lost their lives and recognize the resiliency of those rebuilding beautiful Haiti.
“Today marks a significant and somber day for people of Haitian descent. We remember the fear and hopelessness. In the aftermath, we also remember the bravery and generosity of the Haitian people and global community,” stated Assembywoman Michaelle C. Solages.
On January 7, 2019, a demonstration was held in support of the approximately 50,000 people from Haiti who were granted TPS in the wake of 2010 earthquake. The designation however will expire on July 22, following Trump’s decision not to renew TPS.
“We want to send a clear message that the Trump administration’s attempt to rescind the protected status of TPS beneficiaries is malicious, unjust, and will adversely affect our interests here in the United States. I applaud the initial stay and call on Congress to reinstate TPS and support legislation that provides a path towards legal status for these hardworking individuals. TPS recipients should have an opportunity to pursue careers and invest in their local communities rather than being forced to live in uncertainty and fear from federal regulations or from court decisions,” stated Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, the first person of Haitian descent elected to the New York State Legislature.
